Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a form of non-invasive brain stimulation therapy that treats mental disorders like depression. The brain is stimulated by using electromagnetic pulses that come from electromagnetic coils placed close to the skull.
TMS therapy is an FDA approved treatment option for those that have treatment-resistant depression that doesn’t respond to traditional antidepressants and other medications. Further studies are currently underway and have shown promising results on the effects TMS has in treating other mental disorders like anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Unlike traditional medications and other brain stimulation therapies (like ECT), TMS has very few side effects. Patients who undergo TMS do not need to be sedated or admitted to a hospital. Patients can even drive themselves home safely afterward.
